Useful Information for Driving in Crete
A rental car lets you travel beyond the main resorts and combine cities, villages and beaches in the same holiday. Main roads connect Heraklion, Rethymno, Chania and Agios Nikolaos, while many local routes are winding and require careful driving. A small car is practical for city stays, an SUV gives families more room, and an automatic makes longer drives more relaxed.
Insurance cover does not apply on prohibited or unpaved roads. Always follow the rental instructions and do not drive on routes specifically identified as prohibited, including the unpaved road to Balos.
