Car Rental Insurance in Greece Explained
Why Insurance Wording Matters
“Full insurance” does not mean exactly the same thing at every rental company. What matters is which damage is covered, what excess remains payable by the driver and which actions invalidate the protection. Before comparing two prices, compare the conditions behind them.
CDW, FDW and Excess in Plain English
CDW, or Collision Damage Waiver, normally limits the driver’s financial liability for vehicle damage to an agreed amount. That amount is the excess or deductible. FDW or SCDW may reduce the excess further or bring it to zero, depending on the contract. Zero excess means there is no agreed deductible for covered damage; it does not mean every type of use is covered.
What This Company’s Policy Includes
The company’s published terms include full damage protection with zero excess, third-party liability, theft and fire protection, personal accident cover and wheels, underside and glass protection. The rate also includes unlimited kilometres, 24/7 roadside assistance, the first additional driver, taxes and a replacement vehicle after serious damage.
Common Exclusions
Insurance never replaces the duty to drive carefully and legally. Cover does not apply when the vehicle is driven on unpaved or prohibited roads, used outside the agreed rental period, deliberately damaged, raced or used to carry people or goods for payment. Incidents involving alcohol, drugs or traffic-law violations are excluded. Lost keys and personal belongings are not covered.
Theft and Keys
Theft protection applies to the vehicle, not personal luggage. The published terms require the customer to retain the keys if the vehicle is stolen. Never leave a key inside the car, and do not leave luggage, phones or camera equipment visible.
What to Do after an Accident
- Stop safely and protect the scene.
- Call the rental company immediately.
- Photograph the vehicles, number plates and location.
- Inform the police so the incident is recorded.
- Do not agree to a private settlement without instructions from the rental company.
How to Compare Two Rental Offers
Do not compare daily prices alone. Ask about the excess, wheels and glass, card pre-authorisation, prohibited roads and breakdown support. A cheaper headline price may cost more once extra cover or a large deposit is added.
